The classroom for visual journalism

Last week The Salt Lake Tribune debuted its new features sections. Aside from three specifically themed sections — outdoors, faith and travel — the new section is called The Mix every day of the week. The new design emphasizes quick nuggets of information mixed with longer trend and profile stories. The Monday and Tuesday sections were also tightened by two pages.

Here are a selection of pages from throughout the week. You can also take a look at the Features Section Redesign album to see larger version of the pages below.

Monday Cover » This section is designed for readers on the go. It offers a look at the week ahead, something entertainment-related they might have missed and several quick-read, consumer-oriented items. The columnist is now anchored to the first column of page 3, with a quote of interest teasing from the cover. Voices offers selections from Tribune bloggers.

Monday Calendar » The calendar page, which previously ran in the Local section, has been expanded. The page also includes an event of the week plus interactive elements at the bottom of the page.

Tuesday Cover » This cover combines elements that had previously run on the cover and back page of the entertainment-themed section. All the Pop Top data now lives on two themed pages inside. The columnist is now anchored to the first column of page 3, with a quote of interest teasing from the cover. Voices offers selections from Tribune bloggers.

Wednesday Cover » The food section loses much of its cover theming, with a food-related centerpiece surrounded by other entertainment-related items.

Thursday Cover » The Outdoors cover remains largely unchanged, although some brief items from the inside now run on the cover. Alternative story forms are encouraged.

Friday Cover » The Friday Mix is our weekend entertainment-themed section. Many cover elements haven't changed, however the Weekend Guide has been emphasized in this design. There is also a horizontal folio that can be used.

Friday Film Finder » The Film Finder on page 3 hasn't changed, except now the page is produced in InDesign, rather than an old version of DT, shaving about one-and-a-half hours off the production time. Also, the colors and typography have been simplified.

Friday Dining Guide » With the old Dining Guide, we realized that a random selection of area restaurants wasn't cutting it, nor was it using our food staff to its fullest potential. The new Dining Guide page incorporates themed listings, plus one restaurant or item of interest from each of our five zones.

Saturday Cover » The popular Faith section has seen a few upgrades to its cover, including several shorter reads in addition to the centerpiece.

Sunday Books

Sunday Travel

The Reaction » Has been fairly positive, although a few readers were dismayed by the columnists no longer starting on section fronts. On a daily design basis, I've found that by moving the start of the columns inside, it's given us more freedom to create some seriously dynamic front pages. And, by using a folio treatment similar to that of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, it's really created a variety of folio shapes that help keep the section covers dynamic.

Anyway, I just wanted to make a quick post thanking everyone — from writers and editors to designers and managers — for helping make this redesign happen and keeping the topics fresh and interesting.

Holy crap, look at this mega-post! Don't you have anything better to do?

Seriously, we're all proud of this features redesign. Colin's worked his tail off against his own exacting standards to produce something really innovative, yet easy to sustain. And what Colin's not telling you is that this section may just be the beginning [needlessly cryptic eyebrow raise].

Well, I pretty much did this blog post in lieu of a style guide, so I think it all evens out. And yes, I have much better things to do than this — which is what makes posting on blogs so attractive. If I weren't such a procrastinator I wouldn't have gotten into newspapers. This is the only industry that truly caters to my lack of planning. Revels, it does.
