Hey everyone (and especially news/graphic artists...)
We've been having some overprint preview problems at the Missourian lately- the old trick of selecting everything then unchecking both boxes (in Illustrator) doesn't work with web GIFs and the problems are carrying over into print sometimes. So, what do you do to make sure white text shows up? Mary Nguyen, the graphics editor, and I are looking to try something new.
Thanks!

I just read and responded to a most curious e-mail about my first post.
The mailer, who shall remain anonymous as he didn't choose to post his comments publicly, ignored the blog's premise and used it as a jumping point to launch an attack on designers in general, whom he called 'drooling idiots that do nothing but draw boxes all night,' and concluding that designers are the cause of the industry's downturn.
To be fair, sometimes design is overblown. Sometimes we do get carried away.
However,… Continue
Idiots. Morons. Dumb. Stupid.
No, this isn't a venom-filled rant on how stupid our readers are. Instead, I'd like to address what I believe is an unhealthy, destructive perception of our audience.
On a typical day at work, I hear at least one person say readers are dumb. We can't run a story because readers won't understand it. We must dumb down headlines because readers lack the ability to grasp higher-concepts. Says who? Oh, right, us.
I'll allow that some of our readers are in fact of less… Continue

New Delhi: Even as pro-Tibet protests gain momentum in Delhi, a special Air China plane carrying the Olympic flame touched down at the Indira Gandhi International Airport at 1 am on Thursday.
The flame, travelling from Islamabad to New Delhi, was handed over to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Chief Suresh Kalmadi by China Olympic Committee officials, amidst the presence of a huge delegation of IOA officials and security personnel.

my 'reduction in force' photo series / project has been getting a lot of attention. honestly, it's kinda crazy. anyways... 2 publications want to use them. they've contacted me and neither have mentioned any kind of compensation. they just want my photos. it's a personal art project, shot on my own time and equipment. they're mine and i can sell usage rights? right?
i'm not good at talking about money especially asking for it. 2 photo editors and 1 photographer here told me i should. plus, i ha… Continue

So I was putzing around on the Web the other day, and I stumbled onto the Web site for my hometown newspaper, the Guangzhou Daily (I haven't been back to Guangzhou since the mid-90s). The Web site's pretty cool, different from the newspaper sites I've been used to seeing. They have an e-Edition of every issue for the last couple years, so you can flip through and see every front. Just a few samples:
The Gulf News is looking for an information graphics director to start a program there. They haven't done much in the way of graphics so far, but ever since Mario Garcia and I got involved, they are really excited about doing more. They have a very talented design and illustration staff, who would become involved.. The paper is amazing, bursting with ads and color, and people who work there are from all over the world. Dubai is an amazing place. I think they'd prefer someone who didn't have a fa… Continue

I invented the term "location challenged" yesterday. I needed to complain about the flabbergasting cab driver who became hopelessly lost looking for --and I kid you not-- the enormous University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where I was co-conducting an SND workshop on information graphics.
My driver boasted, in a distracted kind way that I began to find disheartening as our blue minivan shot down I-40 and he fumbled with his war-torn atlas, that he preferred good ol… Continue

I just attended a seminar in Chicago IL, where I got to meet Robb Montgamery. He was our keynote speaker. I have been interested in SoloJournalism (SJ) since reading about Kevin Sites in the "Hot Zone" and now after listening to Robb I am even more excited and conviniced that this is the type of journalism that I want to go after.
So I am following some of his suggestions about how blogging and social networks can be used for journalism. Thanks Robb for taking the t…
For years we have been asked if this series by Thomas French was online. There is an update to the story, so we finally had a reason to go back and post the series.
It was not the most important case in the world, or the most striking, or the most shocking. The victim wasn’t rich. She wasn’t famous. She wasn’t the daughter of anyone powerful. She was simply a 36-year-old woman trying to make… Continue

Charles Blow is returning to the New York Times after working for a couple of years as the Art Director at National Geographic magazine. He has the absolute best job you can imagine for an information graphics artist: a visual columnist for the OpEd page who will create his own "OpCharts." He will also be creating graphics for their website.

I've always thought that newspapers do a very crappy job of promoting themselves and the role they play, and here's one recent example:
The Pulitzers were handed out on Monday. I saw the headline and heard a quick list of the journalism stories that won on the radio while driving home. I was interested in perusing some of those stories, but didn't have time that day. So I figured I'll just go back and read them online over the next couple days.
When I did, I was very disappointed at the way th… Continue
I got a little snarky in a previous post riffing off of the and railed on election coverage which is full of bells and whistles, but not — well — coverage. But I think it worth taking a serious look at what elections coverage is out there.

It's funny how little attention people pay to any candidate for lieutenant governor. I mean, the vice-presidential nominee, sure, we notice them -- they're a heartbeat away from the presidency, right? But it's the same sort of situation for a lieutenant governor, and unless they're a member of the KKK or something, most people probably don't even know who they are.
I've been watching this play out here over the past week, and it's really striking how eager we all are to have someone good to cli… Continue

I've always disspised typing along a path - for some reason - no matter what program I used, It always seemed cluncky - difficult to control - difficult to change - difficult to modify - and THEN! just when I thought I had everything the way I wanted - the type would fall off the end of the path and disappear.
Today, in a strange ah-ha! moment, as I was woking on a logo for some promotional products, I think i have found an acceptable solution to end all my frustration by simplying making a new… Continue

I think most New Yorkers are still shaking our heads over this whole Spitzer thing.
I mean, he was supposed to be a good guy, y'know? He was supposed to be different, the voice of change and reform and bringing ethics to Albany, the Wall Street steamroller, advocate for truth and justice. I know, most politicians are crooked, so the stereotype goes, but we were sure he was different. And now, he's let us down (not to mention poor Silda and the kids ... I hope that at some point, she gave him a… Continue

So we got an interview request from a reporter today looking for an expert who can comment on a story she's working on. I set her up with an expert at the campus hospital. I told the reporter, who sounded fairly young, that she just needs to page the expert at this number and she'll call her right back (since the expert wasn't in her office, and I guess a lot of doctors still carry pagers). The reporter asks,
"So how would she know what number to call me back at?"
And then it dawns on m… Continue

So I went to see the "Our Body: The Universe Within" a national traveling exhibit making a stop here in San Antonio. Fascinating experience -- features actual human bodies preserved by a resin/plastic injection. Quite creepy in many ways.
But even more fasincating was the program they handed you after buying your ticket. It includes something of a miniposter of one of the human body exhibits. Full color glossy of man in all his anatomical correctness.
But wait! Something is most definitely not… Continue
