- Although I studied graphic design by accident, it turned out that it was the way for me to express. I started working immediately after collage and very soon I realized that editorial design was what I liked best. I’ve been an Art Director in numerous magazines in Greece. Active, Nitro, Madame Figaro, Maison Figaro, Crash, are some but most importantly I directed the launching of Esquire Greek Edition, a title of Hearst Communications Inc., Lucky Greek Edition and Domino Greek Edition, titles of Conde Nast Publications. Especially Esquire Magazine was a turning point for my work. It was the first time that I understood that design serves text and vice versa. Editorial design is not design for designers. A beautiful work that doesn’t connect with the words is wrong design.
Then came Eleftheros Tipos (ET) newspaper, a very challenging project. It involved the redesign of a very old newspaper in terms of design and journalism. It was there that I made sure that design and words are one. Through this project I saw that there is a way to save newspapers, a media that according to statistics is loosing ground day by day, due to the Internet’s rise. A new word for my vocabulary: visual Journalism.
All these thoughts and beliefs where justified by several awards. On 2007 ET won the European Newspaper Award – Newspaperdesign and Concept and 2 Awards of Exellence in the SND Awards. On 2008, 6 Awards in various entries on the European Newspaper Award and the grand price on the SND. ET was voted the Worlds Best Designed (TM) Newspaper. All these with the help of a few very talented designers that was my team at ET and the help of Innovation Media Consulting.
I believe that teamwork is the only way for the success of a project. Designers should also thing as journalists and journalists as designers. And newspapers should stop publishing yesterday’s news.
