The News-Topic is one of the few things here still in business. Broyhill just blackmailed the city, county and state out of $4M to not snatch the last 400 jobs out of here.

I've been meaning to get some pages up on here. I'll light a fire under that, and you can check us out and see how we're doing.

Biography
He knows Tony Majeri.

A founding editor of USA TODAY in 1982.

A 1972 graduate of the College of Design, N.C. State University. He has been a Hearst Visiting Professional in graphics and design at the University of North Carolina and has lectured at universities in the U.S. and abroad. He was an adjunct faculty member of the University of Maryland, School of Journalism. In 1993, he was named a distinguished alumnus of the College of Design. He currently serves on the N.C. State University’s board of visitors (and is a past chairman) and also serves on the board of visitors at the journalism and mass communications school of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division from 1966-1968.

Curtis is co-founder in 1978 of the Society of Newspaper Design (now the Society for News Design) and is a past president. He is the founder and for several years was editor of the Society’s quarterly journal, DESIGN.

Among his awards: the J.C. Penney-University of Missouri Award in Features; numerous gold, silver and awards of excellence from the Society of Newspaper Design; the Society of Publication Designers; Print magazine’s annual regional design contest; and is twice winner of the American Journalism Review’s best-designed newspaper award. He was inducted into the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame in 1997. In 2003, he received the Anton Majeri Award for Innovation and Leadership in Graphics Journalism. Also in 2003, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of News Design. In 2004, he was honored with the Design Guild Award from the College of Design, N.C. State University. In 2006, he was honored by his hometown school system by being inducted into the Caldwell County (N.C.) Schools Hall of Honor. He was named a Poynter Ethics Fellow in 2007.

He is co-editor of “Portraits of the USA,” a photography book, editor and designer of USA TODAY’s “The Weather Book” and “The USA TODAY Weather Almanac,” and designer and editor of The Freedom Forum’s 1994 book, “Death by Cheeseburger: High School Journalism in the 1990s and Beyond.” He is currently working on a weather book for the American Metereorlogical Society.

His work has been noted in several books, most recently “Information Architects” and “1,000 Most Creative People in the USA.”

Richard is married to the former Jane Cromley. They have two children, Tyler, of Seattle, and Charlotte, of Raleigh, N.C. Richard and Jane live in Fairfax Station, Va.
