The classroom for visual journalism

The San Jose Mercury News offers newsroom internships to outstanding college journalists. Summer internships are available in design, photography/multimedia, online, copy editing and reporting.

Our internships are very competitive. Those selected typically have had at least one prior internship with a daily newspaper. Generally, candidates with that level of experience are college juniors and seniors, but others may also apply. All applicants must be currently enrolled college students.

Internships typically run for 10 weeks from June to August. Interns are paid at the prevailing rate for entry-level staff as governed by our Guild contract. That rate is $799.35 per week this summer. We do not offer unpaid internships.

Monday, Nov. 3, 2008 is the application deadline for internships in the summer of 2009. This is not a postmark deadline. We must receive your complete application packet by this date. To apply, send your resume, references, portfolio and cover letter to:
