The classroom for visual journalism

Philip Prouhet

Are there any freelance design sites to help a student's income level?

I have looked into guru.com. Does anyone know of a good place to put my InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator skills to good use while I'm not in the newsroom?

Thanks,

Philip Prouhet

I'll second Bonita's plug of elance. I've used the site for a few projects. You have to separate the wheat from the chaff however. Lots of people who use the site aren't serious or realistic about their expectations vs. what they are willing to pay.

It's relatively easy to spot the people who are serious from those who are just pretenders. Do that and you should be golden.

I haven't utilised this site but a friend passed it on some months back.

All the best.

Philip,

I like elance better than 99designs. In fact I won't use 99designs because you are basically doing work on spec and so you may never be paid for it. Besides that big negative, I just don't have the time to do spec work (not that I would do spec work even if I did have the time).

Elance has strict policies against spec work, and while you are still competing with other freelancers, it's your existing portfolio that wins you the job.

But don't let my personal preferences discourage you from trying 99designs if you are so inclined, Philip.
